I don’t believe anyone consulted me before having both David Bowie and Alan Rickman die in span of less than a week. I would have informed everyone that this unacceptable and deaths of this magnitude need to be spaced out over several months (if not years). Not ok, Fate. Not. Ok.
David Bowie is dead. I say that not to be callous but as a statement of fact. He’s dead. And I’m much more affected than I expected to be. I’m tearing up just writing this and I wasn’t even that big of a Bowie fan. Sure, I loved “I’m Afraid of Americans“, his duet with Trent Reznor that dropped at the height of my Nine Inch Nails fandom. I’ve always loved the hauntingly beautiful version of “Little Drummer Boy” he performed with Bing Crosby. His performance (and codpiece) in the movie Labyrinth captivated me as a child.
I know that without his influence so many of the artists that I love would never have existed. He made so much possible in our culture as a whole. Even the Gilmore Girls owes a debt to David Bowie – how many times is he referenced in this show? “Suffragette City“is name checked at least once. And now he’s gone. The world is a little less weird now, a little less wonderful. That’s a shame.
In Men In Black, a movie about people who police the space alien population on Earth, Will Smith makes an offhand comment about Elvis’s death to Tommy Lee Jones’s character. Tommy Lee Jones responds with something like, “Elvis didn’t die. He just went home.” That’s how I feel about Bowie. The spaceman didn’t die. He just went home.
Good luck on your next mission, Mr. Bowie. Thanks for stopping by our little backwater of a planet and making it a little more interesting.
Happy new year! Before I get into my review of this episode, I wanted to say a big THANK YOU to you, the reader. Yes, YOU. Thank you so much for sticking with me through this, though Gotham, and through whatever other nonsense I’ve posted in this tiny corner of the interwebs. Thank you if you clicked here by accident one time, or just started reading yesterday, or have been with me from day one. THANK YOU.
In 2015, my blog received just over 10,000 views. Ten thousand. For someone who didn’t even clear 300 views in 2014, this is a huge deal. I never thought I’d get over 10,000 views! To be honest, I never thought I’d get more than 10. I know my view number might not be a big deal in the grand scheme of the Internet as a whole, but it’s a big fucking deal to me. I could not be more grateful. I cannot thank you all enough. You are the best.
When I started reviewing Season 5, I noticed that the Gilmore Guys were in the middle of the season. “YES! I’m going to catch up!” I thought, excited by the idea of not being a million plus episodes behind them. I looked again today when I downloaded last episode’s show. NOPE. They’re at the end of the season!
Damn it. I feel that I will never finish these reviews. I feel that I will never be able to focus on anything else because I am obligated (by imaginary forces!) to finish these reviews. My apartment is a disaster right now because I am in the middle of a “home improvement” project that has resulted in more mess than improvement. Yet I review.
Merry Belated Christmas to all who celebrate Christmas! Happy Holidays to all others! Regardless of your color or creed, as long as you appreciate terrible writing filled with grammatical errors and swears in place of substance, you are welcome here at Last Ditch Effort.
I don’t want to write this review. I want to write smut or make my own 2016 I’M ORGANIZED NOW! Calendar (which I’m sure won’t last more than a month). I want to plan menus and eat popcorn and watch Forensic Files and read depressing books about the Dust Bowl or forest fires that kill all the people.
This is the kind of thinking that made it impossible to finish all seven seasons of this show in a year.

Fun fact – the dust bowl was a manmade ecological disaster. YAY!
Today is December 19 and Christmas is less than a week away. I know this will shock everyone, but I’m not a particularly religious person. But there are two things I absolutely must do every Christmas season or it’s just not Christmas to me. They are – make italian cookies to eat on Christmas morning, and post the animated version of Patton Oswalt’s “Christmas Shoes” bit. Merry Christmas.
